This course will explore family structure and situate immigrant and refugee families within Canadian society. The course aims to: 1) provide students with general knowledge about the type and composition of Canadian families; 2) become familiar with refugee and immigrant family conditions; 3) critically analyze how race, gender, class, age, nationality, religion, and immigration status affect individual, family, and family relations; 4) explore immigration policies, practices, and responses to the ever changing needs of immigrant families; 5) explore issues related to divorce and the response of the criminal justice system to the abuse of women.
