The cFLEX Faculty Conference gathers online and correspondence instructors together for a one-day, in-person opportunity to connect with colleagues and peers. Enjoy keynote speaker Duncan Stewart's address on Tech, Media & Telecom Predictions for Continuing Education: 2018 and Beyond, network at breakfast and lunch, and participate in hands-on professional development workshops delivered by internal and external online learning experts.
Duncan Stewart
Duncan is the Director of TMT Research for Deloitte Canada, and is a globally recognized expert
on the forecasting of consumer and enterprise technology, media & telecommunications trends. He
presents regularly at conferences and to companies on marketing, technology, consumer trends, and
the longer term TMT outlook. He also works with individual clients (across all industries) in
assessing the impact of technological, demographic, and regulatory changes on their business
strategies.
He is a member of Deloitte's national TMT executive team, and co-author of Deloitte
Research's annual Predictions report on trends in TMT. He is also conducting cross industry
research for Deloitte in Latin America, as well as the Nordics (Sweden, Denmark, Finland and
Norway) in 2017/18.
Duncan has over 25 years of experience in the TMT industry. As an analyst and portfolio
manager, he has provided research or made investments in the entire Canadian technology and
telecommunications sector, and won the Canadian Technology Fund Manager of the Year award in its
inaugural year. In his time as an investor he deployed a cumulative $2 billion of capital into
global TMT markets.
Duncan has a high profile media presence and is frequently interviewed on technology, media
and telecommunications issues. He has been a technology columnist for the Globe and Mail, CBC Radio
and the National Post.
He is a CFA® charterholder and also holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of
British Columbia.
Iain McPherson
Iain McPherson has a Master of Education (Specialization: Distance Education, Instructional Design) from Athabasca University where he was nominated for the Governor General's Gold Medal award. He has taught in both college and university settings (Durham, Humber, UOIT / Athabasca). Currently a member of George Brown College's eLTI, Iain served as instructional designer and faculty development specialist in the Teaching and Learning Department at ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø Polytechnic and was a member of Durham College's Centre for Academic Excellence (C.A.F.E). In a previous life, Iain spent 25 years in the music industry working with artists U2, Madonna, Nine Inch Nails, Watchmen, Rankin Family, etc. Family life includes time at the cottage with his Associate Dean wife, walking their two rather smelly dogs, or getting in 'just 100 more kilometers' on his road bike.
Sherri Parkins
Sherri does not like to disclose how many years she has been working in Accessibility and Education! She has a M.A. in Assistive Technology (Education), a certificate in ASL interpretation and she has additional educational certification in Augmentative and Alternative Communication. She has presented both nationally and internationally at multiple conferences on assistive technology, learning strategies, UDL and disability. She is continuously involved in the training of professors, teachers and the public on issues related to UDL, assistive technology and learning strategies. She enjoys the challenge of finding unique solutions that incorporate strategies and assistive technology to support students with disabilities on a daily basis. She also is involved in various transition programs for students with disabilities at ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø.
Jennifer Peters
Jennifer is currently an eLearning and Digital Literacies Librarian at ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø Polytechnic
Libraries, and seconded to ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø's Centre for Teaching and Learning for part of her time. She is a
co-coordinator of the ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø Sandbox (a digital media/maker lab), the Project Manager for the
Ontario College Libraries' Learning Portal, the Chair of ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø's Open Educational Resources
Committee, and a co-founder of the eLearning in Libraries Collective.
In a day she might plan conferences and professional development events, shoot and edit
videos for the library's instruction program, build online tutorials for students or employees,
assist faculty with finding open textbooks or using library resources in Blackboard, consult with
faculty who want to assign digital projects, and teach students and faculty how to create Wordpress
sites, instructional videos or digital stories.

Susanna Trebuss
Susanna Trebuss became involved in facilitating adult learning after a 25-year business career, holding executive positions in marketing, customer service, strategic planning and general management in both Canada and the United States. In this second career, Susanna is engaged in coaching and training in both organizational and educational contexts. Susanna's educational background includes a Bachelor of Commerce from Queen's University and Certificate in Adult Education/Staff Training from ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø Polytechnic. She is MBTI and FIRO qualified and has published in the fields of marketing, strategic planning and adult learning. Clients have included Toronto Rehab Hospital, Humber River Regional Hospital, Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, Canadian Payroll Association, Ontario Association of School Business Officials, and City of Toronto Water Department. Susanna also teaches a variety of courses related to adult learning at Centennial college and ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø, including instructional design, testing and evaluation, presentation and facilitation skills, and managing diversity. She has been honoured with Excellence in Teaching Awards from both colleges. Internationally, she has developed and facilitated programs in adult learning and the evaluation of training in Dubai and Egypt. Beyond her work, Susanna has been involved with a number of volunteer activities, including the United Way of Toronto, Carousel Players, and Elizabeth Fry Society, as well as local cat rescue organizations. She is an active member of Toastmasters.
Courtney Trott
Courtney Trott BSc. MA Ed is currently the Project Manager in the Centre for Flexible Learning at ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø Polytechnic, where she oversees the creation of more than 40 online courses annually. She also teaches Anatomy & Physiology and Nutrition online for ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø. She was previously a faculty member in health sciences at Georgian College for 7 years, has taught extensively for the Armed Forces, and has led the delivery of many corporate training contracts. She completed her Master's in Education through Central Michigan University with a focus on instructional design and early alert initiatives to support student retention. Courtney has a passion for enhancing the student experience with a focus on student engagement in all its different forms.

students' experiences? Find out what appeals to adult learners and what turns them off! Gain an
understanding of the characteristics and expectations of adult learners and how these principles
apply in an online learning environment.

What are the stages of the learning cycle? Why are they important and how can we ensure
students are moving through the cycle? Effective learning requires more than consuming and
repeating large amounts of material. Learning is most effective where participants have the
opportunity to engage in a process that encourages them to integrate theory with action and to
apply new learning to their experience. This session will provide a model for facilitators to help
maximize the learning in their courses.

reduce workload or enhance the experience? Come to get an expert's review of Blackboard tips and

The Faculty Reference Group (FRG) was created to represent the "voice" and needs of online and correspondence faculty. Based on faculty feedback, cFLEX and the Faculty Reference Group (FRG) are pleased to provide this, and future opportunities, for online and correspondence faculty to gather, connect, and grow together.
