Faculty Development and Review Policy

Purpose

To enhance and support teaching excellence, continuous improvement, program quality and student success, while promoting professional growth for ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø Polytechnic faculty members.

Scope

This policy applies to all Full-time, Partial-load, Part-time and Sessional faculty members.

Key definitions

Accrediting bodies

Organizations that establish operating standards for educational or professional institutions and programs, determine the extent to which the standards are met and publicly announce their findings.

Full-time faculty members

Academic employees who are hired permanently on a full-time basis as professors.

Micro-teaching

A faculty development technique whereby the faculty member reviews a recording of one of their teaching sessions to get constructive feedback from peers or students about what has worked and what improvements can be made to their teaching technique.

Partial-load faculty members

Academic employees who teach more than six and up to and including 12 hours per week on a regular basis.

Part-time faculty members

Individuals who teach six or less hours per week on a regular basis.

Sessional faculty members

Full-time academic employees appointed for up to 12 full months of continuous or non-continuous accumulated employment within a 24-calendar month period.

Policy

1. General

  1. ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø is committed to teaching excellence and high-quality programs, informed by explicit and systematic feedback on teaching effectiveness, professional development and collaboration.
  2. Faculty reviews and development processes will foster teaching excellence and create a great educational experience for students.
  3. ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø will conduct metrics-based, evidence-informed quality assurance assessments of its teaching standards.
  4. Faculty will achieve academic excellence through transparent evaluation criteria, goal setting, faculty reflection and professional development opportunities.

2. Faculty reviews

  1. Faculty reviews will ensure that teaching methodologies, course content and assessments align with ÌÇÐÄvlog¹Ù꿉۪s Teaching Standards of Practice.
  2. Faculty reviews may include
    • institutional feedback from students obtained through course assessment surveys
    • class visits by chairs or designates
    • the opportunity to obtain peer feedback and/or participate in micro-teaching sessions
    • goal-setting connected to priorities in ÌÇÐÄvlog¹Ù꿉۪s Strategic Plan
  3. All reviews and accompanying documentation are confidential and will be maintained in accordance with ÌÇÐÄvlog¹Ù꿉۪s privacy-related policies and applicable legislation.

3. Faculty development

  1. Faculty members will refine their teaching methods, stay current in their respective fields and actively contribute to advancements in knowledge.
  2. Faculty development opportunities will include, but are not limited to:
    • self-reflection and goal setting for continuous improvement
    • informal feedback from students
    • regular conversations with chairs or designate

4. External accreditation and quality assurance standards

  1. ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø will exceed provincial quality assurance standards and the requirements of applicable accrediting bodies.
  2. Compliance with external accreditation audit and quality assurance requirements will be achieved through:
    • assessment and verification of faculty qualifications and credentials
    • regular and ongoing review of faculty performance, informed by student evaluations
    • institutional supports for regular and ongoing professional development for faculty to maintain currency and relevancy, enhance teaching practices and promote scholarly activities

Appendix: Faculty development and review processes

1. Chair class visits

  1. Faculty members and chairs, or designates, will schedule a class visit and a follow-up meeting.
  2. Frequency of classroom visits:
Faculty group Frequency Notes
Full-time, non-probationary faculty A minimum of every three years Classroom visits will be in-person, virtual, or a mix of both
Full-time probationary faculty Each semester during their probationary period, in accordance with Collective Agreement. Classroom visits will be in-person, virtual, or a mix of both
Partial-load part-time and sessional faculty As required Classroom visits will be in-person, virtual, or a mix of both

2. Annual Faculty Review and Development meetings for full-time faculty

  1. Chairs or designates will schedule Annual Faculty Review and Development meetings to discuss faculty performance and development.
  2. Faculty members and chairs will keep copies of the reflections and professional development plans discussed at the meetings.
  3. Processes for the Annual Faculty Review and Development meeting are as follows:
    • Faculty members will reflect on, and provide examples of, how the inform their teaching
    • Faculty members will summarize their professional development priorities for the upcoming year, such as:
      • advancements in pedagogy
      • goals to enhance teaching effectiveness
      • contributions to the Strategic Plan
      • engagement in professional development
      • participation in scholarly activities and/or industry partnerships

3. Student feedback

  1. The faculty member and chair, or designate, will receive student feedback through Course Assessment Survey results.
  2. These survey results will be discussed each year in the Faculty Review and Development meeting.

4. Peer feedback

  1. Faculty members may elect to participate in peer class visits and/or micro teaching sessions and provide feedback to their colleagues, when invited.
  2. Faculty members may elect to include peer feedback in their reflections and/or professional development plans.
