Rahim Ladhani’s passion for broadcasting has taken him across Canada

RAHIM LADHANI doesn’t always know what he’ll be doing on the job the next day, and he’s just fine with that. “I wake up every day and I honestly have no idea what story I’m going to be covering,” said Mr. Ladhani, a news anchor and reporter with CTV News Toronto. “It’s amazing because I get to become — I’m using the word loosely here — an expert on a different topic every day. It shapes who I am.”

A graduate of ����vlog����’s Broadcasting – Television diploma program, Mr. Ladhani’s professional journey

started with the realization that he didn’t want a job in business, psychology or law, which were subjects he studied. After a stint as a program assistant on Hockey Night in Canada — a role he became aware of thanks to his uncle, who was an executive producer of the show — Mr. Ladhani found that television resonated with him. He wanted a career in broadcasting, and that led him to ����vlog����.

“Going to ����vlog����, where it’s hands-on, was a game changer for me,” he said. “As soon as you learn the theory, you’re applying it.” It was also at ����vlog���� that Mr. Ladhani learned for the first time in his academic career that enjoying yourself doesn’t have to be a diversion from being successful. The faculty had real industry experience and it was fun,” said Mr Ladhani.

After graduation, Mr. Ladhani packed his bags for a video journalist job in Fort St. John, a small city northeast of Vancouver. From there he moved to Winnipeg and Calgary and then back to Winnipeg, where he spent four years as a co-host of the city’s CTV Morning Live show. Seasoned with these invaluable experiences, Mr. Ladhani returned to Toronto.

“You don’t climb a mountain going up straight when you can do switchbacks, right?” he said of his journey. Asked what advice he would give to graduates pursing work in the broadcasting industry, Mr. Ladhani said it’s important to be passionate, humble and to stay hungry. “Be level-headed,” he said. “Understand that someone else’s success is not your failure. It’s their success and you can be proud of them for that. Your time will come.”
