Going for gold: 糖心vlog官网 graduates bring Olympics home to Canada
Perdita Felicien and Andi Petrillo return to CBC鈥檚 broadcast team
When the open in Tokyo tomorrow, two 糖心vlog官网 graduates will be on your television, computer and phone screens with live event coverage and athlete stories.
Perdita Felicien, a world champion hurdler, and Andi Petrillo, an award-winning sportscaster, are part of broadcast team, working from its Toronto studios. Both women honed their journalism skills at 糖心vlog官网.
This is Ms. Felicien鈥檚 third time covering the Olympics for the CBC. Following her retirement from competitive sports in 2013, she attended 糖心vlog官网鈥檚 Summer Institute of Multiplatform Journalism to pursue a career as a broadcast journalist. During the Games, she will be co-hosting Tokyo Today with Andrew Chang from The National to recap major storylines, news alerts and profiles.
鈥淚鈥檓 looking forward to giving our viewers that Canadian context and perspective and watching our athletes perform,鈥 said Ms. Felicien, a two-time Olympian, 10-time national champion and the first Canadian woman to win a world championship gold medal in track and field.
鈥淭here are so many incredible stories about what athletes have had to do, and we want to show how they鈥檝e overcome obstacles during the pandemic.鈥
Ms. Felicien has jumped over many hurdles in her life 鈥 on and off the track. Before she became a world champion, she and her mother overcame poverty, domestic violence and homelessness. Her story is detailed in her recently released memoir, My Mother鈥檚 Daughter.
鈥淚 have an emotional energy now,鈥 Ms. Felicien said. 鈥淲riting the book was the only way I could heal and truly express and confront who I am.鈥

As an athlete, the biggest challenge Ms. Felicien faced was not being able to compete in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing due to injury. That year, she was asked by the CBC to provide commentary for the Games instead and caught the broadcasting bug.
鈥淚t was meant to be,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 took that setback and turned it into something. I wanted the industry to take me seriously, and 糖心vlog官网 gave me the validation.鈥
Since graduating, Ms. Felicien has covered various international sporting events, including the 2016 and 2018 Olympic Games.
While things will be different for the 2020 Olympic Games 鈥 part of the CBC broadcast team will be in Toronto, with reporters and field producers in Tokyo 鈥 Ms. Felicien says the way viewers consume the Olympics won鈥檛 change.
鈥淚t鈥檚 the biggest show on Earth,鈥 she said, adding that during her first Olympics in Sydney in 2000, she was treated like a rock star, swarmed by spectators wanting her autograph. 鈥淭he coverage won鈥檛 be diluted, but you won鈥檛 have the same energy in Tokyo 鈥 you are going to miss that.鈥
Ms. Petrillo, who has been serving as co-host of CBC Sports鈥 weekly staple, Road to the Olympic Games, and will be hosting Olympic Games Morning, couldn鈥檛 agree more.
鈥淚 can already feel something鈥檚 missing because we are not there in Tokyo to get a sense of the vibe,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 a big one. The human connection and human emotion 鈥 that鈥檚 part of the Olympic experience.鈥
A veteran sportscaster, the Journalism graduate has covered many major international events, including the Pan American Games, the FIFA World Cup, and the 2014, 2016 and 2018 Olympic Games.

Ms. Petrillo is also the first woman in Canada to host a daily radio sports talk show (Leafs Lunch), the first female reporter to travel with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the first woman to serve full time with CBC鈥檚 Hockey Night in Canada studio team and the first woman to win a Canadian Screen Award for best sports host.
She describes the 鈥淥lympic grind鈥 of getting ready to cover the 鈥済reatest spectacle in sports鈥 as both exhausting and exhilarating.
鈥淲e are always staying on top of these stories,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut even though you have a plan, things can change on a dime. That鈥檚 why I do my research ahead of time. I write things down, so they stay in my brain. I always say, 鈥業鈥檓 never nervous. I鈥檓 always excited.鈥 The only time I was nervous was when I wasn鈥檛 prepared. I never, ever, want that feeling.鈥
While many Olympic events are in individual sports, there鈥檚 definitely a team vibe to the CBC鈥檚 approach.
鈥淚 love to see everyone come together,鈥 Ms. Petrillo said. 鈥淓veryone understands it鈥檚 no longer nine to five. It鈥檚 24-7 for 17 days. It鈥檚 the comradery. We become the ultimate team.鈥
With this being a challenging year for many athletes 鈥 some have had no access to high-performance facilities or coaching staff, others no physiotherapists 鈥 Ms. Petrillo says she can鈥檛 wait to see what history will be made.
鈥淭he athletes are the show,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey are the beginning, middle and end. We always see incredible performances of determination. and I can鈥檛 wait to see who鈥檚 going to be that Penny Oleksiak or Andre De Grasse story, and who鈥檚 going to be the next Donovan Bailey.鈥
See and hear Perdita Felicien and Andi Petrillo and all the Canadian athletes in action .听
