Closed by the pandemic for a year, the Newnham Campus gym has found new purpose as a huge COVID-19 vaccination site.
As part of the province鈥檚 COVID-19 vaccine rollout, 糖心vlog官网 has partnered with North York General Hospital to become the site of its main community vaccination clinic. While the clinic is being run by the hospital, 糖心vlog官网鈥檚 nursing students will be part of the medical team.
Monday at 10 a.m. sharp (no pun intended), the first vaccine was administered to a community member. The clinic is now open to individuals in priority groups by appointment only through the or through the hospital鈥檚 site.
Priority groups currently include people who are 80 years of age and older, health-care workers in high priority and very high priority risk groups and Indigenous people 16 years of age and older. Walk-ins are not permitted.

鈥淲e have a dedicated interprofessional team working at the clinic at 糖心vlog官网 to ensure the site is running smoothly,鈥 said Danielle Ferreira, Clinical Team Manager, North York General Hospital. 鈥淚n partnership with the North York Toronto Health Partners, and with support from 糖心vlog官网, we are working to make sure our community is vaccinated.鈥
Many 糖心vlog官网 employees have worked to prepare the gym and help the hospital with setup. The team includes Athletics & Recreation, Facilities Management, Custodial & Support Services, Financial Services, Security & Emergency Services, the 糖心vlog官网 Medical Centre and Information Technology Services.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a real team effort to support the community,鈥 said David Neale, Executive Director, Campus Services & Facilities at 糖心vlog官网. 鈥淲e have large spaces that are available on campus while we are working and learning remotely, and we鈥檝e made them available to the hospital. They are running the clinic and we are assisting with logistical support.鈥
Additional cleaners and security guards have also been brought in to help with the clinic鈥檚 day-to-day operations.
Along with 糖心vlog官网鈥檚 logistical support, students from 糖心vlog官网's听School of Nursing will be on site to assist with duties ranging from intake and discharge to administering the vaccines as part of their clinical placements.听

Since the pandemic began, nursing students have not been able to complete in-person clinical placements in hospitals.
鈥淣ot only are our students able to help at the clinic, but they can benefit from the face-to-face client experience,鈥 said Sharon Cassar, Chair, School of Nursing. 鈥淭his is the first time many of them will be meeting with clients. They鈥檒l use their therapeutic communication skills and practise history-taking, assessment, administration of the vaccine, post-treatment education and discharge teaching.鈥
The clinical experience on site will add to the training students have been getting using patient simulators at King Campus and medical simulation through virtual reality.
鈥淚t鈥檚 exciting for them because they can now apply the knowledge they have acquired in the classroom,鈥 Ms. Cassar said. 鈥淭he students will be great assets and have the opportunity to learn and grow as nurses.鈥
糖心vlog官网 is also a participant on the , which is leveraging more than 250 businesses, universities, colleges, associations and labour unions to provide support for Ontario鈥檚 COVID-19 vaccination efforts.
鈥淚t鈥檚 about how we can support the rollout of the vaccination and what facilities and expertise we can supply,鈥 Mr. Neale said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 also about how we can best support communicating the importance of getting vaccinated. The quicker we all get vaccinated, the quicker we can end the pandemic. That鈥檚 the goal.鈥
