Youth to Postsecondary (Y2P) project at 糖心vlog官网
The Youth to Postsecondary (Y2P) project at 糖心vlog官网 provides free-of-charge academic upgrading and life skills training that makes it possible for disadvantaged young adults to earn a college education and improve their career opportunities. Y2P is a collaboration between 糖心vlog官网 and the Toronto District School Board to offer a 30-week instructional program at 糖心vlog官网鈥檚 Yorkgate Campus, located in the Jane and Finch community. Upon successful completion of this program, students possess the skillsets to enter a college bridging program, become apprentices or find employment. Y2P is specifically designed for young people who are out of school, unemployed and have expressed a desire to attend college but lack the math and English skills to take the first step.

Hammed Babatunde arrived in Canada as a refugee from Nigeria. With no family or connections, his first stop was a mosque, followed by a shelter.

While many students like Hammed need Youth to Postsecondary to succeed, funding for the program is limited. 糖心vlog官网 has approached donors to help expand its impact, and partners like Telus and the Catherine and Maxwell Meighen Foundation have been generous with their support.

The most recent contributors to Y2P are a brother and sister who have experienced adversity first hand and understand the importance of helping young people overcome obstacles to education.

Daniel and Emma Michael鈥攂oth lawyers鈥攇rew up in a single parent household and saw many friends make the wrong choices, abandon their studies and sacrifice their futures. Today Daniel, a criminal lawyer, works with marginalized youth who find themselves in bad situations that could be prevented with the kind of support Y2P offers.

鈥淥nce kids reach 17 and don鈥檛 have the credits they need, it鈥檚 very difficult to take that leap to get a general education diploma,鈥 says Daniel, whose practice is just down the street from Yorkgate. 鈥淚t鈥檚 important that we offer them a helping hand.鈥

Emma鈥攚ho practices real estate, family and corporate law鈥攚as inspired by the dedication of her older brother to turn the adversity he faced as a young man into a successful academic and professional career. She has done the same for herself and now wants to help others.

鈥淭o help people in all walks of life achieve a postsecondary education is valuable to Canadian society,鈥 says Emma. 鈥淚 got support from my family and teachers. I feel it鈥檚 my obligation to help people in the same circumstances as me but do not have the same support.鈥

Thanks to donors like Daniel and Emma, Y2P will continue to grow and serve more at-risk youth looking to build brighter futures for themselves and their families. They will also receive the support needed to cover living costs and develop a game plan for the future.

鈥淚t鈥檚 inspiring to see people who have the courage to get up every day and aspire to be better,鈥 says Emma. 鈥淚t also helps the community as a whole. For me, that鈥檚 the ultimate motivation.鈥

Y2P stats

  • 40,000 students in Canada become high school dropouts each year
  • High school dropouts make up 80 per cent of Canada鈥檚 prison population
  • Nearly 83,000 youth in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area are not in education, employment or training. This accounts for about 10 per cent of the young people in these regions.
  • The collective lifetime revenue loss for each person without a postsecondary education over a 35-year period is $307 billion. The lifetime private health care costs for these people is $623 billion.
